Lago Vista, Texas — On the North Shore of Lake Travis
Lago Vista, Texas sits on the North Shore of Lake Travis, 40 minutes from Austin. Local guide to the town, The Island resort, and villas available to book direct.
Lago Vista sits on the North Shore of Lake Travis, about 40 minutes northwest of Austin. It is a lake town in the proper sense — the community grew up around the water rather than sprawling out to meet it.
Where it is
Lago Vista runs along the north side of Lake Travis on TX-1431, with Jonestown immediately east and Point Venture across the water. Downtown Austin is roughly 40 minutes; Austin-Bergstrom is about an hour.
It is quiet. There is no downtown strip and no hotel district. What there is: lake access, Hill Country views, and enough distance from the city that the sky is dark at night.
The Island on Lake Travis
Most of our guests stay at The Island on Lake Travis, a gated resort community at 3404 American Drive. Villas are privately owned and let as vacation rentals, and every stay includes access to the resort’s pools and hot tubs, private marina, lighted tennis courts, spa and fitness centre, and on-site restaurant.
Worth clearing up, because it is the question we are asked most: The Island is not actually an island. You drive in through the gate and park on site. The name refers to the resort, not to a landform.
Around the town
Beyond the resort, Lago Vista has parks with lake and boat-ramp access, a golf course, and a small airpark. The Lago Vista POA operates amenities for residents and their guests, and some rentals in town include that access — worth checking before booking if it matters to you.
Grocery shopping and everyday services are in town; the larger supermarkets are toward Cedar Park.
On the water
Lake Travis is the reason to come. Boating, swimming, paddleboarding, and fishing are all within a few minutes of anywhere in Lago Vista.
If your trip depends on launching a boat, read our Lake Travis water level guide first. The lake is a reservoir and its level moves through the year — that affects ramps and dock access, though not the resort amenities, the pools, or anything off the water.
When to visit
- Spring — the most comfortable weather and typically the fullest lake
- Summer — busiest and hottest; book well ahead, and expect the water to be the main event
- Autumn — warm, quieter, and good value
- Winter — mild and very quiet; the best rates of the year, and popular with longer-stay guests
