Lake Travis Water Level — What It Means for Your Trip
How the Lake Travis water level works and what a low or full lake means for a stay at The Island on Lake Travis — marina access, swimming, and what is unaffected.
Lake Travis is a reservoir, not a natural lake, and that single fact explains almost everything about its water level. It was created by Mandsfield Dam on the Colorado River and is operated by the Lower Colorado River Authority as a flood-control and water-supply lake for Central Texas. It is supposed to rise and fall.
“Lake Travis water level” is one of the most-searched phrases in this area, and most of the results are a number without context. Here is what the number actually means for a trip.
How the level is measured
Lake Travis is measured in feet above mean sea level, not depth. Full pool is 681 feet. A reading of 660 doesn’t mean the lake is 660 feet deep — it means the surface sits 21 feet below full.
The lake has a very large operating range compared with most reservoirs, which is why the shoreline can look dramatically different between visits. That range is the design working as intended: capacity is deliberately kept in reserve for flood events.
For the live figure, use the LCRA at lcra.org. They publish it daily. Any number quoted on a vacation rental website — including this one — is out of date by the time you read it, which is why we don’t quote one.
What actually changes when the lake is low
Being honest about this is more useful than pretending it doesn’t matter.
Genuinely affected:
- Boat ramps. Each ramp has a usable range, and some close long before others. This is the single biggest practical impact.
- Dock access. Floating docks follow the water down, so the walk out gets longer and steeper.
- Shoreline appearance. More exposed rock, gravel, and mud. Coves that hold water at full pool can become walkable ground.
- Marina services. Rentals and slips may relocate or restrict operations at low levels.
Not affected at all:
- Swimming — the water is simply further out
- Resort and rental pools, hot tubs, and Beach Club facilities
- Hiking and biking trails, which arguably improve as more shoreline opens up
- Restaurants, wineries, golf, and everything else off the water
- The Hill Country views, which are the reason most people book in the first place
What it means for a stay at The Island
For the overwhelming majority of guests, the lake level does not determine whether the trip is good. Everything that makes The Island work — the resort pools and hot tubs, the spa, the tennis courts, the restaurant, and the villas themselves — is entirely unaffected by how high the water sits.
The marina is the part that moves. At lower levels, slip access and the walk to the water change, and boat services may adjust. If your stay is built around getting on the water, call us before you book.
The exception is a trip built specifically around a boat. If you are trailering your own boat, or the plan is a charter or ski day, check ramp status close to your dates and have a fallback. We would rather tell you the situation before you book than have you arrive disappointed.
If you are unsure, call us. We are at the resort and we see the lake daily — we will tell you what it actually looks like right now, not what a stock photo suggests.
Seasonal pattern
As a rough guide, and with the caveat that Central Texas weather ignores patterns whenever it likes:
- Spring — typically the fullest period, following the wetter months
- Summer — falls steadily under heat, evaporation, and downstream demand
- Autumn — often the lowest point of the year, before winter rains
- Winter — slow recovery; quiet on the water and the best value on rentals
A single large storm can raise the lake substantially in days. A dry year can hold it low for many months. Neither is unusual.
The short version
Check LCRA for today’s number. If you are boating, check ramp status too. If you are coming for a house on the water with a pool and a view, book with confidence — the lake has been rising and falling since 1942, and the Hill Country is still there either way.
