Point Venture: A Golf Cart Peninsula on Lake Travis

Point Venture is a small gated village on a peninsula on the North Shore of Lake Travis, next to Lago Vista and about 40 minutes from Austin. It was laid out as a resort community around 1970, and it still feels like one: winding roads under oaks and cedars, almost no through-traffic, and a golf course, marina, park and floating restaurant all a short golf cart ride apart.

Six things we tell Point Venture guests first

1. Play the 9-hole course, even if you are not a golfer

The course was designed by three-time Masters champion Jimmy Demaret and opened in the early 1970s. It has no bunkers and no water hazards, so beginners enjoy it, and the elevated tee on hole 7 looks straight down to Lake Travis. Play the nine twice: slope and wind make the second loop feel like a different course.

2. The clubhouse bar has something on most nights

The bar at the golf club runs weekly events such as cornhole, trivia, bingo and live music on weekends, and it is open to the public. Check the club’s calendar for the current schedule.

3. Feed the catfish at Captain Pete’s

Captain Pete’s Boathouse is a floating restaurant and bar at the Point Venture marina, reachable by car or by boat. Children love buying fish food at the ship store and watching the giant catfish surface by the pier. Stay for dinner on the water.

4. Find the sandy beach

Most Lake Travis shoreline is rocky limestone. Point Venture’s lakefront park has one of the few sandy areas on the lake, plus a disc golf course, boat ramps, sand volleyball, a basketball court and a covered pavilion.

5. Play tennis after dark in summer

The community courts include lighted tennis courts and pickleball. On summer evenings, when the daytime heat has passed, the lighted courts are the place to be.

6. Fish early, and wear water shoes

The shoreline holds bass, sunfish and catfish year-round. The fishing is best before about 8 AM, before boat traffic picks up. A Texas fishing license is required for ages 17 and up. Wear water shoes whenever you step into the lake: zebra mussels cover rocks and docks and cut bare feet.

Getting around

Point Venture Marina leases its slips to members of the Point Venture Association, and the park and its ramps are association amenities.
